NASA issued a press release (developed by JPL and Armstrong Public Information Offices) entitled, “NASA Research Aids response to Earthquake in California’s Napa Valley”, where it highlighted the use of UAVSAR repeat-pass interferometric data to reveal slips that occurred on multiple strands of the fault near the quake’s epicenter.

Other press coverages that highlighted the ongoing UAVSAR research on the South Napa Valley earthquake included livescience, and the Pasadena Star-News.  The latter article included interviews of UAVSAR Principal Investigators Eric Fielding and Jay Parker regarding ongoing UAVSAR and satellite radar observations as well as GPS measurements to monitor activities along the San Andreas Fault in an effort to better understand the probability of future earthquakes as well as emergency response applications.

We have surpassed our Threshold Mission requirement of flying two years over 3 of the 9 biomes by a significant margin. In fact, we have completed at least two years of science acquisitions over 6 of the 9 biomes and 85% of the flights for year 2. Science team members were in the field conducting field sampling at Howland Forest and Duke Forest during the last round of flights in the East Coast

UAVSAR was deployed on Friday (8/29/14) to image the area around Napa, CA, following the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that occurred on Sunday, Aug. 24, collecting 12 lines covering a broad area around the epicenter, extending east and south to capture impacts to the water conveyance infrastructure of the Sacramento Delta. This flight supported emergency response for levee and aqueduct damage assessment and rapid imaging of fault slip that occurred across the region. The processing team was able to rapidly initiate the processing on Friday night so that Repeat-Pass Interferometric (RPI) browse images were available to investigators by Sunday and refined RPI products began to be delivered to investigators (Burgmann, Donnellan, Fielding, Jones, and Parker) Tuesday morning. With browse data, we were able to provide information to the California Department of Water Resources about movement along the San Pedro Bay shoreline by Sunday afternoon in support of their response activities and to the USGS to direct their ground survey crews. The UAVSAR images show slip details around the epicenter of the quake in areas where the X-band COSMO-Skymed data released earlier in the week were totally decorrelated. The results agree with ground surveys of movement on the main fault and provide much more comprehensive information about the movement that occurred across the region.

The P-band radar has successfully completed all of the flights in the East Coast campaign which are flown as local out of Harrisburg, PA.  These flights imaged Duke Forest twice, Harvard Forest thrice, and Howland Forest thrice. During both Duke Forest over-flights and on two of the three Howland Forest over-flights, JPL personnel were in the field collecting ground truth concurrent with the radar imaging.

CARVE flew 17 flight hours over Innoko, Huslia and Bettles areas.  During these flights, CARVE observed enhanced CH4.

UAVSAR resumed science flights last Thursday and conducted our quarterly observation for the Mexico earthquake studies. This week UAVSAR will be observing volcano activities at Yellowstone National Park and conducting a Sacramento Delta flight for levee monitoring and SMAP mission calibration/validation study.

This week CARVE flew three science flight days. Two flight days were over Fort Yukon, and the last day was south of McGrath.

We are in the midst of the second East Coast campaign of the season based out of Harrisburg, PA. So far we have flown over Duke Forest in North Carolina twice and Harvard/Howland Forests in New England once.

06/26/2014

We have successfully completed the three remaining San Andreas fault monitoring flights.

We will begin our second East Coast campaign this week acquiring data at Duke Forest in North Carolina and Harvard/Howland Forest in New England.  Science team members will be collecting field data in Howland Forest during the radar flights.  Science team members reported during the science telecon that they are making good progress generating higher level science products and refining their processing algorithms based on validation data.
